Monday: Who Started the Cold War? Using the documents to the right, answer the following questions for each. Doc A - What does Churchill claim the Soviet union wanted? Doc B - Why did Truman believe Greece needed American foreign aid in 1947? Does Truman present American policy as offensive or defensive?What words or phrases does Truman use to present policy this way? Doc C - How does Novikov describe the United States? What evidence does he use to support his description? What does Novikov claim the United States planned during the Second World War? Doc D - What is Wallace’s main argument? How does Wallace’s description of American foreign policy compare to Truman’s and Novikov’s? Based on what you've read, provide a thesis and 2 supporting sentences (using evidence from the documents) to the following question: Who was primarily responsible for starting the Cold War, the United States or the Soviet Union? Tuesday: Debate - Communists are a threat to the United States 1) You may work with a partner or on your own, no groups of 3 2) On the sheet of paper that I gave you, draw a line about 1/3 of the way down 3) Above the line = a T-chart with the 4 best points from each argument Below the line = Paragraph explaining your position, include the 3 strongest arguments underlined. I should be able to tell from the first sentence what you position is. Monday - The Century: 1960-1964 Read the "Ballot or Bullet" speech by Malcolm X by Wednesday Tuesday - Civil Rights Act of 1964 (John F. Kennedy and John Lewis speeches); Answer the following Google Form prompt with a well-developed thesis and supporting paragraph: To what degree was John F. Kennedy a strong supporter of the Civil Rights Movement? Wednesday - Martin Luther King Jr. (I Have a Dream) vs Malcolm X (Ballot or Bullet) As a group, answer the following questions: 1. Explain Malcolm X's claims not to be anti-white? Why do you think so many rejected his analysis? 2. Analyze Malcolm X's critique of the civil rights movement. What are his criticisms? 3. Why did he see the use of violence as justifiable? 4. What economic and political changes did he advocate for the black community?
